Minutes, reports, and correspondence relating to the founding and activities of the Roxbury Athenaeum. Minutes of founding meetings discuss the need for the permanent establishment of library and reading room, procurement of donations and subscriptions, cost of subscription shares, establishment of fund committees, and list of the twenty-seven original subscribers. Reports of the Librarian to the Trustees discuss number of bound volumes, pamphlets, and circulation statistics along with general condition and activity of library. Other materials include: receipt of gift, suggestion by H.A.S. Dearborn for inscription over main door, and a letter from John Sherborne Sleeper, Mayor of Roxbury, to Henry Bartlett, Board of Trustees President, regarding the establishment of a free library in Roxbury.
